Abstract

In order to validate a methodology to justify the collections in university libraries of the University of Zulia, Venezuela, it was resorted to action research in the particular case of the “Raúl Lazo Osorio” Library’s collection at the School of Humanities and Education. Following the theoretical guidelines associated with document discarding, in addition to technical advice, opinions from the librarians involved in the process and consultations with experts, it was achieved to observe the discrepancy between the criteria of the latter and the rest of the sources considered. We conclude that an evaluation methodology of collection evaluation, based solely on the opinion of experts (professors), is not advisable in order to take the final decision to discard materials in university libraries.
