The MAOP Collection of aerial photographs of the UNAM Institute of Geography Library: an epistemological change in treatment and procedures (1st. part)

Abstract

This paper is divided in two parts, the first one aims to point out the proposal of doing an epistemological rupture to improve the development, storage, organization, cataloging, and usage of the aerial photograph collection of the “Antonio García Cubas” Library of the Institute of Geography, UNAM. It is expected that this notion will respond to the problems that aerial photographs (AP) had been carrying out for decades. The first part of this text begins with the development and arising of the aerial photograph collection and their epistemological obstacles; the second part focuses in the MAOP Collection, which belonged to Mario Arturo Ortiz Perez, a distinguished researcher and photograph reader of this Institute who used AP as his principal research tool in remarkable UNAM projects. By this mean, it is pointed the AP value of usage in Geoscience, Biological, and Social Sciences fields to describe the spatial analysis of the territory. It should be noted that this proposal incorporates Information Science procedures and techniques, Paper conservation cares, Geography and Photogrammetry. Altogether, these knowledge fields will respond to these singular informational needs.
