In response to the questions and desinformation to the covid-19 pandemic, most governments and health institutions recommended the cancellation or deferral of elective surgery. This action was relevant in order to have hospital beds available and to guarantee the supply of personal protective equipment (ppe), as well as to protect patients and health personnel.
Globally, many governments are moving from a restrictive position to reopening elective surgery. This requires a low prevalence in the community and access to sars-cov-2 tests, as well as ensuring that there are sufficient trained personnel, intensive care beds, ppe and all other necessary medical supplies. This pandemic could affect the access to safe surgery, especially in low- and middle-in- come countries; This is a huge concern that needs to be addressed. Surgery is an essential part of modern medicine, but additional risks during the covid-19 pandemic must be carefully considered.
This pandemic has also transformed the medical care of surgical and non-surgical patients, it has given us the opportunity of new forms of care, such as when it is carried out remotely using telemedicine, and other digital means, as well as it has forced us to obtain greater efficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, thus reducing their visits to the hospital, as well as relocating hospitals and bringing hospital care to patients and not the other way around.
