This technological shift prompted a thorough analysis of procedures across various areas within the DGBSDI and the Library and Information System of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (SIBIUNAM), with the aim of identifying processes that could be automated through the development of information systems. Among the systems identified were: the weekly update system, designed to synchronize the Koha ILS book databases with the central LIBRUNAM data-base; the barcode generation system; the Koha monitor for generating reports and statistics; and the thesis registration system, which enables the recording of theses produced by UNAM students in a database managed by the Koha ILS.
Within this context, the Add Tesis system to Koha was proposed and developed to automate the registration and processing of thesis information produced by UNAM students. The system is designed to integrate this process into the Koha library management system, thereby streamlining the workflows within DGBSDI following the migration from ALEPH to Koha.
Marcial Contreras Barrera, Pablo Martín Trejo Pavón Copyright (c) 2025 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1581 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Challenges in Health Documentation from the Perspective of Library Science https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1582
Health documentation fulfills a strategic role in supporting key processes such as clinical research, medical education, institutional management, and evidence–based decision–making. Within the Mexican context, this process encounters significant structural challenges, including data fragmentation, unequal access to scientific information, and the lack of public policies that promote information literacy. This paper examines these challenges through the lens of library science, emphasizing the critical role of librarians as knowledge mediators across educational, clinical, and institutional domains.
To address these issues, the article proposes a set of viable strategies: the development of community–based digital libraries, the implementation of sustainable training pro- grams in information literacy competencies, the establishment of inter–institutional collaborative networks, and the ethical integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. These initiatives aim to reduce informational disparities, enhance health equity, and foster the development of evidence–based public policies.
Omar Chávez Martínez Copyright (c) 2025 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1582 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Information needs and information behavior of older adults: Francisco Villa Housing Unit, Mexico City https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1583
The article explores the information needs and information behavior of older adults living in the Francisco Villa Housing Unit. Using a quantitative approach and 50 surveys, key interests such as health, recreational activities, and politics were identified, while topics like science and technology were less relevant. Older adults often combine digital and physical formats, relying mainly on video platforms and search engines. However, they face barriers like a lack of technological skills and unfamiliarity with reliable sources.
Findings highlight the persistent digital divide, hindering access to trustworthy information. This scenario underscores the need for strategies that merge digital literacy with traditional resources, fostering equitable inclusion in the information environment. Additionally, a shift toward digital technologies is evident, though traditional preferences remain significant in some areas.
Carolina Herrera Salinas, Ricardo Tavira Sánchez Copyright (c) 2025 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1583 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 00:00:00 +0000 The Institutional taxonomy for the library of the Academic Unit of Regional Studies of UNAM https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1571
The design of the institutional taxonomy for the Library of the Academic Unit of Regional Studies (BUAER) of the UNAM is presented. The objective was to create a taxonomy that would allow the organized storage of the digital information generated in the library in its daily work, following the logic of its processes, according to the administrative theory of process management. The Argudo and Centelles methodology was what allowed the design of the taxonomy that is the object of this work. This taxonomy will facilitate the precise recovery of its contents through intuitive navigation in the One- Drive storage system, this because the structure is in accordance with a language of common knowledge to the librarians who use it. It is concluded that the institutional taxonomy that was built provides a structure that will allow storing and recovering information in an orderly manner, that follows the logic of the processes of a library, and that has a character of greater permanence over time. Finally, this institutional taxonomy can be adopted, with previous adjustments, to other libraries or information centers.
Alberto Fernando Lemus Lemus Copyright (c) 2025 Biblioteca Universitaria http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1571 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 The Digital Library as a Narrative: A Multidisciplinary Redesign Experience at the University of Guadalajara https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1576
The Digital Library of the Universidad de Guadalajara, a platform designed to meet the informational needs of its academic community, requires a comprehensive redesign to incorporate new functionalities, navigation logics, structure, graphic design, and interface improvements. A multidisciplinary team has been developing a new platform that integrates these elements through a user-centered approach based on rhetorical argumentation theory. The project is currently in its final stages, and the updated platform will soon be made available to the university community. This paper presents the experiences and activities undertaken throughout the redesign process, offering insights into the final version that aims to meet the proposed expectations.
Brenda Georgina Estupiñán Cuevas, Leonardo Mora Lomelí Copyright (c) 2025 Biblioteca Universitaria http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1576 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Competencies and Challenges of the Reference Librarian in University Health Libraries: Comparative Analysis Between Cuba and Mexico (2015–2023) https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1574
This literature review examines the role of the reference librarian in university health and public health libraries in Cuba and Mexico, assessing their competencies and challenges from 2015 to 2023. The aim is to understand their impact on health education and research through a critical analysis of current literature. The search was conducted in databases such as Scopus, PubMed, SciELO, Redalyc, LILACS, CUMED, and Infomed, as well as catalogs from UNAM and the University of Havana, selecting publications in Spanish, English, or Portuguese relevant to the Latin American context. Key findings highlight essential competencies like information literacy and expertise in biomedical databases, critical at institutions such as UNAM’s Faculty of Medicine and the University of Medical Sciences of Havana. Challenges include incomplete digitization of resources and infrastructure and technological gaps, hindering access to information in both countries. This professional enhances medical training and public health by facilitating access to verified information. Future research should explore ongoing training to reinforce their significance for the UNAM Library System and Cuban counterparts.
José Luis Montes de Oca Montano Copyright (c) 2025 Biblioteca Universitaria http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1574 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Integration into the catalogo of a university library on loan: merging of the Eusebio E. Kino Library and the Francisco Xavier Clavigero Library https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1575
The experience of integrating the Eusebio F. Kino Library into the catalogue of the Francisco Xavier Clavigero Library, both institutions of the Society of Jesus in México, is shared. It is presented who are these sister institutions and the importance of the library ́s collections, wich amounted to around 190 000 volumes and around 500 titles of periodical publications, almost al lof them specialized. The importance of the collection is adressed, as well as its heritage, bibliographic and documentary value, since this is a cultural treasure of one of the most important theological libraries in Mexico. The activities carried out for its integration into the automated Aleph system, which at that time was library ́s management system, are described. The process of selecting an outsourcing company is documented, as well as other forms of hiring personnel to carry out the cataloging processes of the collection. Finally, a model is provided for how to incorporate large collections into established libraries.
María Guadalupe Barrera Galán Copyright (c) 2025 Biblioteca Universitaria http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1575 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 La Vegetariana (Premio Nobel de Literatura, 2024) https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1588 Nayelli López Rocha Copyright (c) 2025 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1588 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Estela Morales Campos: Personalidad clave en la evolución de la bibliotecología en México y América Latina https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1586 Homero Quezada PacHeco Copyright (c) 2025 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1586 Sun, 08 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Strategies for Book Preservation in Private Collections: A Study from the UNAM Restoration Laboratory https://bibliotecauniversitaria.dgb.unam.mx/rbu/article/view/1584
This paper presents the main aspects to consider for the care of private book collections at home.
